This Charming Man

Let's get right to it, shall we?

LET"S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY(S): a playlist celebrating some of the most fun new male voices that you may have heard and may have not

Each Year: Ra Ra Riot (Something about Ra Ra Riot and lead vocalist Wesley Mile's voice puts me in one of my happiest places: an East Coast town in the summer with a salty breeze blowing over the pier. Perhaps the reason could be the peppy "ra ra" in the band's name?)

I'd Rather Dance with You: Kings of Convenience (The chic-ly geeky duo make up the Norwegian KOC that stir up a sweet string heavy tune highlighted by beats and a simple piano melody. Watch the video: dig the Costello-esque glasses, red sweatsuit, and sweet moves.

Tiny Spoons: Christopher Walla (Death Cab producer/guitarist steps out of the shadows with a solo track off of his "1995-2001" album. Little known fact: Walla has produced for Hot Hot Heat, the Decemberists, and Tegan and Sara, among others.)

Complicated: Ben Gibbard (Another DCFCer, and I know that this is an oldie, but this moody, smirky oft laughter pierced piece is an ironic toast to Avril at the same time being a roast of Avril, funnily enough, by just having her song played to rabid indie pop-punk hating fans. My favorite bit? Ben Gibbard's cachinnation as he pauses between lyrics to say to the audience, "Shut up, you guys, this is SERIOUS." Hilarity. The link is in the p.p.p.s.

If you can't hear what the monolouge after the track is, here's a sample of what Mr. Gibbard said:

The thing about that song that I love...I don't really understand what's so complicated! Like, it seems pretty cut and dry. Like, if somebody came to me and I was that guy and said "why do you have to make it so complicated?" I'd be like, what are you talking about? I like to dress up differently with different people. I live a double life here. We have this thing at home that I really like, but at the same time I like to wear a tie and dress up. I'm not taking off these preppy clothes, I f*****g like 'em!
-Ben Gibbard

More later,

Kit

P.S. Another clip from The Academy Is' TAI TV vault: in this classic the Butcher (the drummer) suffers from a...well you watch it.

P.P.S. I've got my copy of the Bravery's "The Sun and the Moon" on pre-order it's due out May 22). Do you?
