Superman

So I was searching for a good movie to see with my friends when I inadvertently stumbled over the Last Kiss, Rachel Bilson's big screen debut headlined by the hottest writer/director/actor/comedian/fake doctor around, Zack Braff of Scrubs fame. The soundtrack is huge. And by huge I mean heart-stirringly fantastic.
It starts out with a shot of pre-"Eyes Open" Snow Patrol with the quasi-redundant, purely Snow Patrol "Chocolate". Followed by it is a song called "Star Mile" by a Cleavland native by the name of Joshua Radin, an art teacher turned song writer with the help of his friend, none other than a Mr. Zach Braff. While it seems ever so lucky that this song was placed on Zach's movie's soundtrack you can't help but appreciate the undeniable Simon and Garfunkley folk afoot. Next is "Pain Killer" by Turin Brakes which is a beaty, layered Brit pop track that sets heads nodding once the verses start. Following is a blur underappreciated Coldplay ("Warning Sign"), a dreamy Cary Brothers song titled "Ride" that seems to be fit perfectly the plot and theme of the movie, a slow beated peppy vocalled Athlete hit (El Salvador), and the electro-indie song that became a mega-hit after it was featured on The O.C. when Ryan's brother was shot "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap. Coming up next is a trio of R's: Rachel Yamagata, Ray LaMontagne, and Remy Zero. The first two are mellow piano or acoustic guitar+maraccas combos while the song "Prophecy" is a moody, electrified song clearly influenced by Nirvana. You can definitly hear a bit of "In Bloom" in there. Amy Mann follows up with "Today's the Day", which embodies a bit of Mellisa Ethridge and a bit more Sarah McLachlan. Amos Lee, funk singer/songwriter weaves out "Arms of a Woman" with a soulful James Taylor-esque style. "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk", my favorite Rufus Wainwright song is next and to tie up the whole thing finally is "Paperweight" a duet done by Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk. While I do like this pretty acoustic package of a song, I would rather have seen Schuyler Fisk's "Hello" (which is not available on Itunes) closing out the score. All in all, though, I'm loving it.
I'm also loving the Scissor Sister's popdisco irony with their single "I Don't Feel Like Dancing", the song that inspired me to learn The Hustle. That's right, I'm a certified Hustler. But in order to spare you from the lead singer's shiny eggplant jump suit (and more than slightly creepy music video) I decided not to post the clip. You'll thank me, I'm still shuddering.
However, you might like this music video by The Shout Out Louds titled, "The Comeback". Enjoy:
Anyone else hear about Sophia Coppola putting the Strokes' "What ever Happened?" in Marie Antoinette? She has now won me over and I thank her profusely for being so cool. I'm sure I'm not the only one falling on my knees, grateful for a movie with good music (Julian Casablancas is probably praying to God right now, thanking him for the saint that is Sophia Coppola for putting his music on a kickarse soundtrack). Their new single "You Only Live Once/Mercy Me" is available for purchase...now.
I am very excited for the new Beck release, The Informer. I'm even pre-ordering it, dorky much?
P.S. In the "Reptillia" video J. Casablancas looks...hot? What is this? Ah but wait, in "12:51" it's back to Fab, the way things were meant to be. Ahhhh.
P.P.S. I'm thinking of trademarking the term 'So Emo'. Just kidding. Kind of.

imogen heap=> speeding cars, let go.. love all her songs and her sound [frou frou too]
funny thing about zach braff- i caught a bit of Chicken Little last night on tv.. good stuff. although my mom and i both seem to agree his voice doesn't match the tiny but strong-spirited chicken he portrays..
are you going to post a review for The Illusionist? or perhaps about angry old ladies who sit behind you in the movie theater? oh and maybe you could throw in something about reese's pieces in popcorn and an efficient way of mixing them without disturbing the whole theater? ;)
there's always something new here- i love to read ur blog!
